Grenoble and its surroundings |
The Capital of the Alps and an Olympic
city in 1968, Grenoble has an unusual
situation: the city is spread out at the meeting point of 3 massifs,
the Vercors, the Belledonne range and the Chartreuse. Stendhal said
of Grenoble: "there's a mountain at the end of every street..."
A city where high tech is much in evidence, with a well-known university;
it is also a city of art and history. In Grenoble many architectural
and cultural treasures can be found: the St-André, Notre-dame, and
Grenette squares, the Palais de Justice (Law courts) and the city
gardens are all places that you really must see. Only a few remains
of the wall which used to surround Grenoble are still standing; one
of these is the Fort de la Bastille, which is accessible by cable-car,
or if you feel really fit, there are steps up to it, nearly 400 of
them!
At the top, you have a marvellous panoramic view of Grenoble and its
suburbs. |
